DAILY VERSE

“I begged your disciples to drive it out, but they could not. ‘O unbelieving and perverse generation,’ Jesus replied, ‘how long shall I stay with you and put up with you? Bring your son here’” (Luke 9:40-41, NIV).

DAILY THOUGHT

We see in this verse a glimpse of the personal struggle that Jesus faced over the overwhelming lack of trust and faith in God that He encountered both in those He preached to and in His own disciples. Here, Jesus expresses His agitation and frustration with the disciples’ repeated failure to effectively use the authority and power He has given them to drive out demons. A man comes begging Jesus to act because the disciples tried but failed to cast the demon out of his son. Every parent, teacher, leader, manager and supervisor have faced a similar moment of frustration and irritation. Rather than fly into an emotional outburst, Jesus posed the question, “O unbelieving and perverse generation how long shall I stay with you and put up with you?”

As we look closely at the Gospels, it seems that Jesus had every reason to pose this question often. I am sure Jesus wondered how long will I have to stay with you before you: come to believe that I am who I say I am; understand why I have come and why I must go; learn to walk in the authority and power that I have given you; learn all that I have to teach you; learn to do the impossible through me; perform the same miracles that I have shown you; realize how much I love you and God loves you; come to understand what is at stake here and that the fate of millions rests on your shoulders. Mighty Man and Awesome Women of God, I encourage you to ask God to reveal how long He has been waiting on you to walk out His perfect will in your life.
