“Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps My word he will never see death.” (John 8:51, NASB).
The world is fascinated with stories of people who narrowly escape death. Circus performers, Hollywood stunt artists, and magicians draw large crowds by promoting “death defying acts.” This fascination with death is rampant in our society. We are surrounded by individuals and groups of people who are drawn to death and destruction. We watch the evening news and are bombarded with heinous acts of cruelty, pain and suffering, acts of brutal violence, abuse, and murder. Every child of Satan, the original murderer, worships death and destruction and perpetrates death and destruction in their own lives and the lives of others. In marked contrast, as I read this verse, I am reminded that eternal life and death-defying acts should describe the normal everyday life of Christians.
Belief and simple obedience to God’s Word gives us the power and ability to pull off death-defying acts regardless of our circumstances. Belief and simple obedience to God’s Word are the keys that unlock every lock, break every chain, and destroy every cell or stronghold. Belief and simple obedience open the windows that allow us to escape. Belief and simple obedience to God’s Word provides the rope we need to climb to safety. Belief and simple obedience to God’s Word causes the storm to change directions before it hits our house. Belief and simple obedience to God’s Word causes our car to stop instantly, seconds before impact. Belief and simple obedience to God’s Word protects us from the onslaught of deadly diseases. Belief and simple obedience to God’s Word cast the net that catches us when we fall and ensures that our finances are not burned by the flames of recession. Forget Harry Houdini children of God, he can’t teach you a thing. I encourage you to commit today to keep and honor God’s Word. Fulfill this Scripture, live long, and become one of “Heaven’s Escape Artists.”
Lord, thank you for salvation and eternal life through Your Son, Jesus. Father, your grace, mercy, and Word are all I need in every situation I face. Through the blood of Jesus and in the name of Jesus I pray, Amen.
