“Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life” (Romans 6:4, NIV).
Paul tells us very clearly that as Christians we were buried with Christ so that our old life, our sinful life could die. As new creatures we have been reborn so that we can have a new way of thinking and behaving. Dirty with sin on Saturday, saved through Christ Jesus and baptized on Sunday. Now, what do we do on Monday? Several years ago, the Lord led me to develop some tools to use with my executive coaching clients. The tools (Kingdom of God Checklists & Prayer Cards) are encounters with God and are designed to help both new converts and mature Christians examine their thinking and behavior.
New Christians need to understand what to do on Monday morning to embrace their new “life of righteousness.” There are two things they must do: (1) Believe and (2) Renew their minds by examining their behavior to see if they are living their lives as a “new creature” or if they have become “backsliding children.” The test is not what you do on Sunday at church in front of a room full of other Christians, but what you do on Monday morning when you are at work, surrounded by all your old friends, sinners, and unbelievers. Unfortunately, for many Christians, Monday mornings resemble the Saturday night before they were saved at church on Sunday. They think and act the way they did before they were saved. They may make a few changes, but are usually double minded with one foot in the world and one foot in the kingdom. I find the more I grow spiritually the more people ask me, “So what has changed in your life since you became saved?” My answer is always, “Everything!” I recognize that my journey continues each day and that I am still growing in Christ, but I am thankful that I am not the foolish, rebellious, prodigal son that ran from my Father’s house to the world. I give God praise that I came home to a new life and that every day is Monday.
Lord, thank you for salvation through Jesus Christ and for giving me new life in Him. Jesus, help me to bury the old man each day so that the new man in me may live. Fill me with your perfect love that casts out fear and selfishness. Give me the grace to display in my behavior the righteousness I received by faith, giving you all the glory and all the praise. Through the blood of Jesus and in the name of Jesus I pray, Amen.
